What is a monoblock battery?
A monoblock battery is an accumulator in which all the cells are housed in a single casing. It is the most widespread solution for off-grid solar systems of small and medium power, as well as for caravans, boats, and backup applications. Its compact format simplifies installation and maintenance, and there are flooded lead-acid, AGM, and GEL variants to suit each use.
Advantages of monoblock batteries
- Easy installation: single format and reduced connections.
- Versatility: wide range available in 6V and 12V, with various capacities.
- Affordable cost: excellent price/performance ratio.
- Maintenance-free options: AGM and GEL technologies do not require electrolyte replenishment.
- Compatibility: work with standard MPPT charge controllers and inverter chargers.
Which technology to choose?
- Flooded lead-acid: most economical option. Requires maintenance (electrolyte level) and ventilation. Suitable for occasional use or tight budgets.
- AGM: sealed, maintenance-free, good current delivery, and vibration resistance (caravan and marine).
- GEL: sealed, very good durability in deep discharges and daily cycles. Ideal for small homes and demanding motorhomes.
Typical applications
- Small homes or cabins with basic consumption.
- Caravans and campers (lighting, refrigerator, water pumps, electronics).
- Recreational boating where reliability and vibration resistance are important.
- Backup systems (domestic UPS) and light telecommunications.
Key specifications to consider
| Common voltages | 6V and 12V |
| Technologies | Flooded lead-acid, AGM, GEL |
| Life cycles | According to technology and depth of discharge (DoD) |
| Maintenance | Flooded lead-acid: yes; AGM/GEL: maintenance-free |
| Compatibility | PWM/MPPT controllers and inverter chargers |
Selection tips
- Define your usage profile: occasional (flooded lead-acid) vs. daily use (AGM/GEL).
- Size by usable capacity (Ah) and typical depth of discharge (DoD).
- Check space and ventilation, especially for flooded lead-acid.
- Ensure the charger/controller matches the battery technology.
If you are looking for a compact, economical, and easy-to-install solution, monoblock batteries are an excellent choice. And if you also need to minimize maintenance, opt for AGM or GEL. For tighter budgets or less frequent use, consider flooded lead-acid.
