When to choose a 48V inverter?
A 48V inverter is the ideal choice when your off-grid installation requires continuous power and several loads operating simultaneously (refrigerator, pumps, light tools, occasional air conditioning). By operating at 48 V DC, the current is halved compared to 24 V and reduced to a quarter compared to 12 V for the same power, minimizing losses and allowing for more reasonable cable sizes.
Advantages of 48V
- Higher efficiency in the DC section due to lower currents.
- Higher sustained power without requiring oversized conductors.
- Better scalability of the battery bank to increase autonomy.
Typical applications
- Off-grid homes with daily consumption and several kW of demand.
- Small businesses/workshops with continuous loads and start-up peaks.
- Installations with 48V lithium batteries (LV) or sized stationary banks.
Key selection criteria
- Nominal and peak power: calculate simultaneity and start-up loads (compressors, pumps, tools).
- Pure sine wave and high efficiency at partial load.
-
Integrated functions:
- Need to charge from grid/generator? → inverter with 48V charger.
- Need to connect panels directly? → inverter with charger + MPPT or with MPPT.
- Protections (low voltage, overload, temperature) and communications (RS485/CAN, Wi-Fi, app).
- Installation: proper ventilation, accessibility to fuses/disconnectors, and correct grounding.
General specifications
| DC input | 48 V (AGM/GEL/Stationary banks or 48 V Lithium) |
| AC output | 230 V single-phase (depending on model) |
| Power range | ~2–8 kW or more (model-dependent) |
| Waveform | Pure sine wave |
| Options | Integrated AC charger, integrated MPPT, source priority, EPS |
Best practices
- Install DC fuses close to the battery and properly sized disconnectors.
- Use busbars for clean distribution and balanced battery bank connections.
- Configure battery type and charge/discharge thresholds according to the technology (AGM, GEL, OPzS, Lithium).
If your off-grid system requires continuous power and efficiency, a 48V inverter will provide you with margin, stability, and more contained cabling. Also consider the versions with charger and with integrated MPPT to simplify installation.
