What is the GAVE collection in photovoltaic protection?
The GAVE collection brings together boxes and protection components specifically designed for solar installations in AC and DC. It includes single-phase and three-phase AC output panels with circuit breaker and residual current device, as well as DC boxes for photovoltaic strings with disconnection and surge protection, ready to operate up to 1000 V DC depending on the model.
Advantages and limitations
- Pre-configured solutions that simplify design and reduce assembly times.
- Configurations for single or multiple strings, single-phase or three-phase, and different current ranges.
- DC protections with disconnection, fuses/fuse holders, and SPD suitable for the PV range.
- AC protections with MCB and RCD (30 mA) according to inverter power and grid type.
- Limitations: it is essential to verify the maximum Voc of the PV array, the Isc per string, and the nominal current in AC to choose the correct panel.
Applications
- Residential self-consumption (single-phase inverters up to ~10 kW) with dedicated AC panel.
- SME/industrial (three-phase) with disconnection and coordinated SPD requirements.
- DC protection for PV strings (1 to 4 MPPT / 1–4 strings per input, depending on the box) up to 1000 V DC.
- Integration with single-phase inverters and three-phase inverters.
How to choose your GAVE box
- AC side: inverter power, number of phases (1F/3F), and nominal current (typically 16–63 A). Select the RCD 30 mA and the MCB according to the required current and curve.
- DC side: number of strings/MPPT, maximum Voc of the generator, Isc per string, and need for Type II SPD. Choose appropriate disconnection and fuses.
- Environment: IP rating and installation space. Check cable gland entries and cable cross-section.
Indicative specifications
| AC panels | Single-phase 16–40 A / Three-phase 16–63 A with RCD 30 mA |
| DC panels | 1–4 MPPT / 1–4 strings, up to 1000 V DC (depending on model) |
| DC protection | Disconnector, fuse per pole, and Type II photovoltaic SPD |
| AC protection | Appropriate curve MCB and 30 mA residual current device |
| Installation | Pre-wired, identified terminals, and cable glands included |
| Compatibility | Valid for most 1F inverters and 3F inverters |
Best practices
- Size strings with thermal margin: Voc at minimum temperature < maximum voltage of the DC panel.
- Coordinate SPD in DC and AC with the earthing scheme and cable distances.
- Ensure visible disconnection in DC near the inverter and accessibility of the AC panel.
- Clear labeling of MPPT/strings and insulation and polarity tests before energizing.
Quick comparisons
- Single-phase AC: homes and inverters up to ~10 kW; simple and compact installation.
- Three-phase AC: commercial/industrial, higher currents, and load distribution.
- DC 1 MPPT / 1–2 strings: small generators with a single tracker.
- DC 2–4 MPPT / 2–4 strings: larger generators or rooftops with mixed orientations.
