What does a solar inverter do?
The inverter converts the direct current (DC) from the photovoltaic panels and/or batteries into alternating current (AC) suitable for the home or business. It also manages protections, communications, and, depending on the model, functions such as self-consumption with zero feed-in, back-up, and battery charging/discharging.
Types of inverters
- Off-grid inverters: operate without a power grid. Versions in 12V, 24V, and 48V. Available with charger 12V, 24V, 48V, and models with charger + MPPT to integrate solar regulation.
- Grid-tied inverters: for installations connected to the public grid, without batteries. Single-phase and three-phase versions.
- Hybrid inverters: combine photovoltaic generation and battery storage with backup functions. Available in single-phase and three-phase (LV/HV depending on battery).
- Microinverters: one per panel or for 2–4 panels. Improve production in partial shading and simplify AC wiring.
How to choose your inverter
- Nominal power (kW): size according to simultaneous consumption. Allow margin for peaks.
- System voltage: 12/24/48V for off-grid; LV (48V) or HV in hybrids with batteries; 230V/400V for AC output.
- Phases: single-phase or three-phase depending on the installation.
- With or without batteries: choose a hybrid if you want storage and back-up.
- PV input: number of MPPT, voltage range (Voc), current per input, and admissible photovoltaic power.
- Functions: feed-in limitation, EPS/UPS, monitoring, communications (RS485, CAN, Wi-Fi), compatibility with meters.
- Protections and IP rating: DC/AC protection, SPD, disconnection, and IP suitable for indoor/outdoor use.
